What You’ll Experience
This exclusive tour takes you to two of the most iconic medieval monasteries in Serbia: Studenica Monastery and Žiča Monastery, both located in the picturesque Raška region.
Studenica Monastery – The Crown Jewel of Serbian Medieval Art
Founded in 1190 by Stefan Nemanja, the great Serbian ruler and founder of the Nemanjić Dynasty, Studenica Monastery stands as a symbol of medieval Serbian power and prosperity. Surrounded by fortress walls, the monastery complex includes several churches, the most famous being Bogorodica Church (Church of the Holy Virgin), carved from white marble.
Studenica is home to some of the most exquisite 13th-century frescoes, including the renowned Crucifixion of Christ, considered one of the finest achievements of medieval Serbian art. The serenity of its mountainous surroundings makes it a true spiritual retreat.
Žiča Monastery – The Coronation Church of Serbian Kings
Located near Kraljevo, Žiča Monastery was built in the early 13th century by King Stefan the First-Crowned. This vibrant red monastery was not only a religious center but also the seat of the first Serbian Archbishopric in 1219, marking the moment when the Serbian Orthodox Church gained independence.
Throughout history, Žiča was the site of coronations for Serbian kings, making it a significant landmark in national history. The monastery’s interior features stunning frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries, showcasing the Golden Age of Serbian Art.
