Welcome to Zlatibor Mountain – the most popular tourist resort in Western Serbia, about 220 km from Belgrade. There you will have a unique opportunity to visit the open-air museum – Old Village in Sirogojno and Stopica Cave with its awe-inspiring cave stalactites and an underground river. Zlatibor is also a place for gourmets, where you can taste domestic, Serbian specialties – prsuta (smoked ham), kajmak (a creamy cheese spread), komplet lepinja, tea made from mountain herbs, and, of course, a shot of traditional plum rakija – sljivovica.
Sirogojno – open-air museum
This unique place showcases 55 buildings (32 of which are permanently exhibited) relocated from the villages of Zlatibor Mountain, presenting the architectural skills, interiors, and way of life in the hilly-mountainous areas of Western Serbia. Initiated in 1980 by architect Ranko Findrik and the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, with the support of Mrs. Dobrila Vasiljević-Smiljanić and ethnologist Mrs. Bosa Rosić, this process involved the transfer, setup, and reconstruction of Zlatibor log cabins in the “Old Village.” The memorial complex of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul Church, dating back to the 18th century, along with the open-air museum, became protected as a cultural monument of exceptional importance in 1983.
Also, it is a must to stop at a local, village restaurant to indulge in a tasting experience of authentic local food and beverages (lunch is not included in the price).
Stopica cave
Situated on the northeastern side of Zlatibor Mountain, between the villages of Rožanstvo and Trnava, Stopića Cave is located 250km away from Belgrade, 30km from Užice, and 19km from the Zlatibor tourist center.
Stopića Cave is a captivating river cave, with the Trnavski stream flowing through its chambers. It comprises three distinct speleological and hydrologic horizons: the periodically flooded horizon, the river horizon, and the youngest horizon known as the crack. With a length of 1,691.5m in its mature system, the cave covers an expansive area of 7,911.5m² and boasts a volume exceeding 120,000m³.
The cave’s entrance, located on the right side of the Prištavica River, is truly impressive. Positioned at an elevation of 711.18m above sea level, it spans an impressive width of 35m and reaches a height of 18m. The limestone layer within the cave dates back to the Triassic period and measures over 100m in thickness. With its mesmerizing river flow, vast chambers, and impressive entrance, this captivating cave is a natural masterpiece waiting to be explored.
